A Kindred Spirit Re‑imagined for the 70s Renaissance

Shown at Le Carreau du Temple during Paris Fashion Week, the collection celebrates a modern narrative of freedom, joy&nbsp; and the enduring bonds of chosen creative families. Zimmermann runway became a living canvas of 1970s artistic rebellion, re‑interpreted through a distinctly Australian lens. Creative Director Nicky Zimmermann described the show as &ldquo;an ode to the collaborative artistic spirit of the 70s and chosen creative families the world over&rsquo; and the result was a vibrant, free‑wheeling celebration of colour, texture and community.

The collection draws direct inspiration from a loose‑cannon collective of iconic artists who made their mark in Lavender Bay, a suburb on Sydney Harbour, during the 1970s. Like their contemporaries in London and New York, these creators pushed against the era&rsquo;s conservative norms, forging a uniquely Australian aesthetic that blended bold self‑expression with a playful sense of camaraderie.&nbsp;
Zimmermann&rsquo;s narrative positions these artists as the &ldquo;chosen creative families&rdquo; whose supportive kinship fuels today&rsquo;s fashion freedom.

Colour is the collection&rsquo;s heartbeat. Vibrant off‑beat shades : lavender, mustard, peach and deep teal pulse across block‑colour cotton drill jackets, super‑flared trousers. Psychedelic floral and soft tie‑dye prints swirl across organza, silk and denim, creating &ldquo;trance‑inducing graphics&rdquo; that appear to move as the model walks. Lace, traditionally rendered in pristine white, is now rendered in bold hues, adding a fresh, playful twist.
Bird motifs. Embroidered, hand‑stitched or cut away appear on an asymmetric denim midi dress and panelled jeans, reinforcing the collection&rsquo;s nature‑inspired narrative.
Accessories channel the &ldquo;more‑is‑more&rdquo; elegance of the 70s. Jewellery embraces Australian motifs: koala figurines, native flora, which remind us of the collection&rsquo;s roots.
