Backed by the Chanel Culture Fund, Martinican artist Julien Creuzet is set to represent France at the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale.

Creuzet, an artist-professor currently teaching at Beaux-Arts De Paris and working in Paris, delved into the significance of this accomplishment in a press conference held at the jardin de la Maison &Eacute;douard Glissant in Martinique, the artist&rsquo;s home country. 
Creuzet&rsquo;s project will highlight the imagination of the Caribbean, and the intersection of cultures that exist within it. The artist&rsquo;s body of work is a powerful exploration of the Caribbean diaspora, and a call to open the imagination of the viewer. Within Creuzet&rsquo;s work is a certain respect for the individual viewer, through its openness and poetry his work is meant to be colored by one's own experiences. Creuzet&rsquo;s pieces are amalgamations of several types of media, found objects, sculpture, poetry, and print among other methods - his work is about creating forms that resist definition.

When discussing his installation for the upcoming biennale, he reveals that the piece will be a sensory experience where the viewer can encounter themselves; an experience that engages the body and challenges perception. He shared a memory that followed him for the creation of the pieces, one where he, his brother, and father would explore the woods of Anse Couleuvre on weekends in search of the Martinique red tree spider. The image and sense memory of searching for a spider in dense woods amidst decomposing tree trunks and layers of foliage, is one that carried this upcoming work.
The artist&rsquo;s participation and representation of France at this year&rsquo;s biennale marks a significant moment for the Chanel Culture Fund, and a championing of an inspirational contemporary artist. Beyond the artist&rsquo;s installation at the French pavilion, his biennale work will also include more than 70 sound pieces being shared on social media and online platforms for the duration of the event. The 60th annual Art Biennale, entitled &ldquo;Stranierei Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere&rdquo; curated by Adriano Pedrosa, opens to the public from April 20th to November 24th 2024.
